Fishing Leagues in our area  (United States)
Modified By pirilad on 4/1/2007 1:16:53 PM

I am glad to see the number of fishing leagues and fishing clubs in our area growing.  This is getting more people involved in fishing and gives every angler many choices.  Hopefully there's at least one league that fits any angler looking to join a fishing league.  Some love to fish only walleyes, some multispecies, some only certain big fish, etc.  I hope everyone finds a fishing league that fits them.

Here's a list of the fishing leagues and fishing clubs that I know of:

  1. Our multi-species group: MMTS, Minnesota Multispecies Tournament Series, Mondays, and 13 nights a year.  The only "True Multispecies Fishing League".  Most game fish species, big fish, pannies and more.  No limit on teams.
  2. Our Bass group:  DABL, Duluth Area Bass League, every other Thursday, 7 days/yr.  Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass Only!  15 team limit.
  3. The Duluth Area Fishing League, multi-species, Thursdays, and 10 nights a year. Invite only.  Big Fish and Pannies. Limited to around 12 teams.
  4. The group out of Fisherman's Corner, walleyes only and run on Thursdays.  Show, pay and fish!  No limit on number of teams.
  5. A Minnesota Power fishing league, that I believe is multi-species, big fish only, I believe.
  6. A small multi-species group out of the Powerhouse in Proctor.  Smaller family type.  Sounds like a fun group.  No pannies, I believe.  15 team limit.
  7. A small bass group that started from Fishing Minnesota, some of who may fish our bass group also.  Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass Only!  15 team limit.
  8. Fishing Minnesota and Ice Leaders run some tournaments too.  Northlander knows about them.  Not sure of species allowed, number of teams, etc.
  9. Reel Fishing League, out of Marine General.  Big Fish only (Northern Pike, Bass, Muskie, Walleye, Trout and Salmon) and run on Mondays.  12 nights, I believe.  6 species only.  15 team limit.

Does anyone know of any others?  I am just curious and think it is AWESOME to see so many people involved in fishing on a regular basis.

What do you think?

I have heard that the Reel Fishing League is now called "Arrowhead Tournament Trail".  I haven't heard too much other than they have had 15 teams commit and a few teams are fishing it from our old groups.  Mostly our walleye group and a few that want to fish Lake Superior and the Bay more.  That's cool.  We are just glad that everyone is fishing and competing.

It is also cool to have another fishing league for people to fish and choose from.  The Arrowhead Tournament Trail is basically a only big fish fishing league.  That would be a lot easier, not having to learn about pannies or other fish.  But it is cool and probably more main stream, with most people too busy to get good at more than a few fish types.  I am loving the extreme challenges of going up against anglers that can make the call of whether to go for the big fish, pannies, catfish, muskies, rockies, etc. and have to get 5-6 species over a minimum size to compete.  Now that's a challenge.

Our sponsors should love us, because it takes more gear, more techniques, more knowledge to fish as many species as we do.  A true multispecies fishing league also makes the clock the biggest enemy.  You only have minutes per species and you have to move, or know that this is the best bet and stick to it.  Either way, true multispecies fishing with all game fish, is extremely challenging and for this angler and fishing junkie.

I love this game..  Bring on the fish and the fishing..

Another fishing club to check out is the Happy Hookers Fishing Club.  They are located out of North St. Paul.  They sound like a fun group.  You can check out there site at www.happyhookersfishing.com   We maybe able to setup a fishing outing with them for some place near Moose Lake.  If that happens it would be a fun time.

Hi Sully,

I never saw any answers to your question about a league out of Al's Bait in Two Harbors.  I don't know of one.  I think that Autum from the ElectroShock team works there on and off and would have said something, if there was one.  I think that they maybe part of the Arrowhead Tournament Trail.  That's a new group just fishing for big fish.  They aren't into pannies or rough fish, just walleyes, pike, muskies, bass and Lake Superior big fish.  I think that is still a lot to fish in 3.5 hours each night, and they are the favorite species for many, so they should have fun.

Keep in touch and thanks for the question.
