Walleye League?
 (United States)
QuoteReply

Hay who started the rumor there is going to be a Walleye only division of MMTS?

I don't know the whole story of last year's attempt at a MMTS walleye league, and won't go there

Well it sounds like a fun group, if I only had enough time to go fishing...

I have a daughter on the way and will have no time, thats why I started up the Duluth Area Bass League.  One species and seven nights, easy enuf.

I know Doug pretty good, but he's not telling, so whos going to put an end to this rumor and actually start a walleye league

Tight Lines...

I am not going to go there for some things.  But there are possibilities of one.  It depends on someone stepping up and doing the money parts, the weigh-ins and working with us to keep things in sync.  Of course, it has to be a day other than Mondays, because we probably have 6-8 teams that would fish it if it were not on Mondays.  Thursdays opposite the bass group would be great.  Or Tuesdays, Wednesdays or pick 4-5 weekend days (Saturdays or Sundays) and go for it.

If someone wants to do that, we can definitely talk about it.  There's way too much interest in walleyes here to ignore it.  After all, walleyes are the state fish for Minnesota.

I'm out here, anyone game?

Hi guys,  There is still talk of a walleye league or at least some sort of big fish league.  I personally think we should come up with a multi-species format that more teams would be interested in.  It seems like with the bass league starting & a walleye league last year, that what some people are interested in is a league where we can fish for our fav. species but still have approx 30 teams to compete with.

So,  would any body be interested in a mult- species league without rock bass, Blue gill, suckers, perch, and poss Crappies?

Just brain storming, but it seems like the league is getting smaller and divided.  I don't know of a solution that will keep everyone.  It just seems to me that some people are embarassed to compete in a league where rough fish are often the difference bet. doing well and being at the bottom of the placings.

hope for some discussion,

Merry X-mas,

Craig

I hear you.

One thing that would work and I could manage is if we have separate pots for walleyes and big fish, not nightly but for the year.  Say a team joins multispecies pays their entry to that.  Then they have the choice to pay into the Big Fish Pot some amount, say $30/team for the year.  Then while they fish each week with multispecies, score with them, and are eligible to win any multispecies prize it doesn't add any complications to the end of night.

THEN at the end of year we run a report totalling Big Fish points, lengths, etc. for those teams in the Pot.  (We can add this to the database easily early in the year).  And the winner gets the pot.  If 20 teams join, that's $600 bucks.

We can do that easily and it doesn't make much work for us.

You could fish just Big Fish every week and still possibly win multispecies AND the Pot or Pots.  Potentially someone could win Multispecies with mostly big fish, then have the most big fish points and walleye points and win them also.

What do you think??  We could do this easy.

But I am not fishing against the Widowmakers for a muskie pot..  No way, you are tooo good there.  Give me some lessons and I might go for it some day.

Merry Christmas!!  Doug

After thinking about this more, I wanted to add that the belief that rough fish separate people from places isn't what has happened.  Whenever I look at the over 4000 fish in the database and the positions that people have placed, no one has won because of their panfish.  And the top teams also are the ones at the top of the lists for most big fish scored.  My team is very low in rock bass, suckers, catfish, blue gills, perch, etc.  We are at the top for walleyes, pike, crappies and average for bass.  Others specifize in walleyes and bass.  In the end if we remove the species you listed, the positions do not change much at all.  All the talk that's out there is what people think is going on and doesn't match what has happened or the fish scored.

I think that the fish scored and what really is happening needs to be heard.  It some times seems that there is more credit being given to rough fish than they ever really add up to.  Just to show that I have put together some numbers.

In 6 years 12 total suckers were scored by 9 teams, that means no one team scored more than 17 pts in a year on them.

In 6 years, most every team scored a perch and no team scored more than 60 points in a year.  Most scoring 12-28 pts in a year and few teams were under 10 pts in a year.  The same is true of bluegills.

In 6 years only one team scored more than 60 points on rock bass in a year and that team scored over a 100 points on them three years in a roll.  We all know who that was..  They were the only team that benefitted from rough fish and it was on a fish we all had a choice to fish or not.  I personally never figured out rock bass that well.  So how could I say anything.

In 6 years, every team has scored crappies and many teams have scored over 100 pts in a year, one team did have three years in a roll with 100 or more points.  But the average per team here was 50-60 points.

All in all when you put them all together they have little effect on the standings.  When I take 2004 and remove them the positions look the same.

Another important factor that comes up each time we talk about this by many teams, is that these other species keep them fishing the league, because without them they might never get a  multispecies bonus and would not compete.  That was the majority vote on this when it was brought to a vote already last year.  So we have addressed this and it has been spoken to.  This is something that makes us a truly multispecies league and special.  There are others that only fish for one species or a select group of fish, but in the end these fish make our choices tougher and our skills better.

We have offered some alternatives, but the main group will keep the multispecies in it and not just the popular fish.  It adds complexities and choices that anglers can choose to learn about or compete by just going after big fish, where the bigger points are any way.  Anyone that makes the call to chase rough fish would have more time to fish for big fish if they only targeted them.  So any gap would not be even what it is and it appears to be little or none, with only one exception.  But they are a good enough team and could fish straight up and compete.

Just my two cents worth and what the numbers have to say.  But I am glad someone asked that important question.  I think we need to remember this was voted on and was kept this way already.  We each choose what to fish for each night and I for one wouldn't bet against the muskie man or widow makers on a good muskie day.

Good fishing and Merry Christmas to all..
Doug
