Learning about muskies, any good books, tapes, etc

I know we have some top musky anglers out here.

Can you point me at the best books, videos, etc. that can help me prepare for next year?

What can I do during this off season to get ready, if I am planning on trying to get into a 50 inch muskie this year?

What tackle should I use in what seasons and what kind of locations are best on the St. Louis River, Lake Vermilion, Mille Lacs Lake, or Island Lake?  I am only trying to catch the first one and then photo and release it.  I have caught 40 inchers but no truly big muskies and I want to break through that wall.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

On that note, is there anything to the guy up on Vermillion that does week long classes for Muskies? Or would I be better off spending the $$$ on buying the "Choppers" team some beers?

Our boat got into 4 skies this year compared to 0 in my lifetime. Only landing one and seeing multiple follows.

Just another reason why I love the MMTS league. Probably never would have even been in a area where a Ski could be caught if I wasn't running with the league or pre fishing for it.

Same here Tom, I've never even seen a follow before joining the league.  In the past 3 years i've seen quite a bit of follows and caught a few small ones.  Thanks to everyone for sharing your tips and getting me out for some skies!

Hi,  In-fisherman has some good videos, There are some ok books out there too but I can't think of the names right now.  But like Tom suggested talking to good musky fisherman is the best way to learn.  I know that alot can be learned from just a day on the water with a musky nut.  I mostly learned by trial and error but there are much faster ways!  As for were to fish for muskies, they are not limited to one part of a lake but good spots are sometimes clustered.  The trick is knowing what to look for.  Books and video can be helpful to understand seasonal movements.  When you catch one be nice and let it go, good pliers and hook cutters are a must!

good luck

Thanks Craig 'Muskie-Master',

I have all the In-Fisherman videos and definitely they are a great way to learn from what others have learned the hard way.  It's like a fast track to muskie fishing.  Still fishing for muskies is a challenge.  I have caught quite a few but want to get over the hump and get a 50 incher.  That's no easy call and maybe it is just time and more hard work.  I am up for that.  I just want to learn all I can before getting back on the water.  I do agree that fishing with an already experienced muskie angler is a great experience.  Anytime you need a fishing partner, I'm game.  I have so many places with muskies and great habitat, it is just a matter of time until we get some strong patterns figured out.  But I will keep swinging.  I certainly will be gentle with it, take a photo and release it.  They are too rare and special to do it any other way.

If you can think of any other videos, books, etc that we could read or watch that would be great.

Thanks and good fishing.
