How many lures do you plan on buying? I would recomend having at least one lure that is able to hit all desired areas of the water column. If you were to limit it to say 7 or 8, here are my recomendations.

1. Big Inline spinner.
2. Tandem spin for working thicker cover
3. Prop style top water. Top-Raider is my personal favorite.
4. Side to side action jerk bait such as a phantom or magic maker. Could go with walk the dog topwater i.e. weagle, doc etc.
5. Bulldog (very versatile bait) I like the bigger ones better than the small ones.
6. Dive and rise jerkbait. I prefer baits made by True-Glide, but Suicks work and are a lot cheaper..
7. Deep diving crank. Ernies are good, but so are many others.
8. Medium diving crank. It is tough to beat the Super Shad Rap.

I am very particular in the line I use. I only use Tuff Line in at least 80 pound test. It is very durable, and UV resistant while at the same time being pliable and easy to cast. I have never lost a muskie due to line failure.

As far as rods go, Fenwick is tough to be beat for the money. You can get a good one in the $100 to $150 range. I would recomend a short rod (6 to 6.5 feet) for working jerk baits, and then a longer rod (7 to 8 feet) for casting most other baits. If you plan on trolling late in the year I would have at least one glass pole in the aresenal as they handle being loaded up with big baits in the cold a lot better than the graphite rods. Fiberglass is cheap too.

I also am partial to the Ambassadeur reels. I think their Record 60 is about the best out there. I am guessing you could pick one of these up in the $150 area. If you are looking to spend less money both the C-3 and C-4 are good reels that would be in the $60 to $70 range.

Lastly, don't skimp on your leader. Casting those big baits all day puts a lots of stress on the hardware of the leader. Spend the extra money and get good leaders. It will not only prevent you from losing an expensive lure, but could also save the life of a trophy fish. Titanium is the way to go. You will want a single strand for working jerbaits, and something like a 7 strand for all other applications. I would also recomend at least 80 pound strength, but I normally run leaders in the 100 to 150 pound test range.
