Spearing - help
 (United States)
QuoteReply

Hey, I have always wanted to do some spearing for pike, BIG PIKE through the ice.  I have seen many big pike and most of the big ones I know of, came to someone spearing through the ice.  I just haven't done it.  I have decoys now, an old spear, and would really like to know what all is there to doing it.

Has anyone done much of this?  I know Dave D. has and lives for it.  Come on Dave, share some how tos.

The don't know that the spear I have is for spearing through the ice.  It doesn't have a connection for a rope, which I would guess is better, plus don't you want something a little heavier?  Mine has a wooden handle and I think the serious spear fishermen I know have all metal spears.

Does it make a difference?  What's the best spear?

How about the shack?  I assume a rope to the decoy from the ceiling to wiggle it around is good, plus a line to the spear, to retrieve it is a must.  I have heard you need to have the points of the spear in the water already too or it makes too much commotion.

Any tips?

ok i'm a spearing vet that can give you some tips. first of all you ahve to have a house that is dark when you close the door. and yes you need a 7 tined metal spear. the spear should have a hole in the end to atach the rope to, and then you can tie the other end to you chair. you house has to have a 3' by 1.5 foot hole. the little 2x1 holes don't work. you attach the wooden decoy to 20 pound test line and you can put it on a rattle reel or something. you also should buy a 8 inch sucker minnow and a harness before you go out. i spear in any ware from 8 to 12 feet of water. don't go up in 3 feet and expect to see big ones. early ice is best because #1 it dosn't take long to chip the hole out and 2 the fish are more active.good spearing is seeing 1 fish an hour. you have to have a metal spear because when you throw it it is a combination of droping it and throwing. don't haul off and throw it like a javelin. it will have plenty of speed.

Hit me up with any more Qs you have.

Welcome Super Good Fishing Teen..  Glad to have you out here.  I am glad someone that spears is around.  I have a bunch of spearing decoys, I would guess the pike like some more than others, do you have a favorite?  Or prefer live big suckers?  I know some guys go one way or the other.  And do you move the decoy a lot or just enough to tease the pike into checking it out up close?  I also have heard that you need to put the tips of the spear in slowly to avoid the splash scaring the fish, what do you think on that one?  What's you approach, since I bet holding a spear for 12 hours and it gets real heavy..

I am sure I will have more questions but we will start there.  How often do you spear?  and what sizes of pike have you gotten?  I know many people get their biggest pike by spear.

Thanks for sharing with us what you know about spearing..

My favorite decoy is one with a red head and white body. i put that one down about 2 feet of the bottom. i also put a big sucker down about a foot of the bottom. so inother words i always use bothat the same time. one thing to remember is that you should always have an extralive decoy. they can be hit by the northerns alot. i only move the fake decoy about once every 20 minutes. and same with the live one. once you see a pike don't touch the decoys. the only time i move them is if the pike starts to leave. or if its huging the bottom you can raise it a couple af feet and some times it will come up to it and give you a better shot.when i spear i set the tines on the edge of the hole and leen the end against the back of the house. then when a fish comes in i pick it up and gentaly put the tips in the water until all the tines are in the water. i spear when ever i get the chance but you have to make sure that the lake is clear and dosn't have many musckies. if you get caught with a speared musckie that would be a problem with the DNR.i usaully hit an average of 2.5 pike i see so if i throw 5 times i can ussaully get 2.you see alot of small northerns or "snakes" but you can see big ones too. my dad goes on a spearing trip with 6 friends and in the 10 years they have gone up to my cabin for a weekend there has been one 41 incher speared. so its not easy to get a trophy.

hope that helped,

feel free to ask more questions!
