Was another nice day to fish everyone caught fish who made it there.
Congratulations team River Rats with your win on Sturgeon and your 5.5lbs largemouth and second place finishers Korpela/Day nice job guys.
On Island team Long Rods caught 15lbs for the win and team Hawg hunters taking second.
Hey Twitch, you sure get right to the point. No major article, just this is it.
Yeah the top teams on both lakes had a monster or a bag of great bass. Very good jobs guys. Rog is keeping the heat on and the Carsons had an impressive Island Lake limit of Largies. Very cool.
So any tips from the winners on what to do, or not to do?
My pops and I were both surprised on Island. When I did a quick estimate I thought we were around 12-13 lbs and didn't think that was going to be enough, so we were trying for a 5th bigger fish, but it never came to the boat.
We fished a few docks right off the get go and caught a bunch of keeper fish off a dark colored tube and senko. I caught a big one off a dock skipping a tube under a boat lift, luckily had my heavy stick with Power Pro, love that stuff.
One fish and I think the 4lber came off of a buzz bait and the only one fish off of it. Fished that near the weed edge and near some bulrushes. The other 2 bigger fish came off of a well defined deep weed edge, where the water dropped off to deep water very quickly off the weed edge using a heavily weighted dark colored tube.
Reading and fishing deep edge weed lines (over 8 ft) is very fun and those not trying should get out and learn it, I'm still trying to figure it out. I'm am quickly learning that not all deep edge weed lines are same, though most of the weed edges do have fish on them, but those bigger fish just want something a little different. Access to deep water rather quickly, good feed and I think mostly is some kind of structure to follow (points, well defined weed edge with some pockets mixed in, gravel/rocks), ugggggh, to much to take in. I think the fish use the structure as a way to move up and down from the deep water to shallow at different times of the day.
A good lake to try fishing deep weeds is Big Lake because it has a big section that is all sparse deep weeds. Those that fished in A league that night on Big Lake should have seen me and Dave fishing out in the middle of lake, thats what we were doing. Dave wasn't used to fishing deep in weeds, so he didn't really have a feel for it.
Tight lines!
Hope nobody reads this from the fly fishing world, otherwise that might flip to see I'm pulling out the bass spinning rod and reels instead of my fly rod.
