Hey I know people get out and hit the spring sucker runs. I would love to learn more about that. Wading in a river, spearing, netting, etc. What do you look for? What's makes a good river, etc.
Do you smoke them all? Do you have a good smoker recipe? I missed out on this when I was a kid and would love to see it, do it. Can anyone help me out?
When I used to fly fish the north shore for salmon, there would be runs of some type of suckers heading up the rivers. They were actually fun to fish for on the fly rod when the salmonoids weren't biting.
You could actually see big schools swimming all over the place. I would just pitch a colored sinking fly to the big schools and one would always bite. They might have mistaken my colored flies for salmon roe, i don't know, but it worked.
I've nevered tried a sucker and don't think I will for a while.
If you don't mind some company, I would love to do it some time. I live in West Duluth, Spirit Valley area.
Have you been doing this for a long time?
Thanks and welcome to multispecies.com We're glad to have you..
There is some easy access areas near the Minnesota power plant on the St. Louis River that get some big carp and suckers. There are few back waters that just get tons of fish in them. I'm talking big carp and suckers. I can see them driving on the freeway or going over the bridge. I've heard of people fly fishing them in this area and have seen others fishing for them. This usually happens near the end of april, beginning of may. Usually around the time the smelt are spawning real good.
Maybe we'll have to keep watch in this area and do some big carp fishing. Anyways suckers and carp are a blast to catch on light tackle. And they actually fight pretty decent, just nasty to take off the hook
Tight lines..
